Industrial identification, engineered in Oxfordshire
Industrial RFID readers that capture the right data at the right point
Fixed readers, handhelds, antennas, portals, tunnels and middleware—specified as one reliable RFID system for your production, warehouse or asset-tracking process.
Industrial RFID explained
What is an industrial RFID reader?
An industrial RFID reader identifies electronic tags attached to products, assets, tools, cases or pallets without requiring a visible barcode or one-at-a-time scan. Fixed readers automate known process points; handheld readers support mobile inventory and search. Antennas shape the read zone, while middleware filters repeated observations and sends a useful event to the PLC, WMS, ERP, MES or tracking system.
Define a useful RFID event before increasing reader coverage: A UHF reader can produce repeated observations of a tag.
RFID systems built around the process
From one dependable read point to a connected RFID estate
An RFID reader only performs as well as its antenna layout, tag selection, mounting position, surrounding materials and data handling.
Oxford Traceability brings those parts together. We define the event you need to capture, test the physical read zone, select suitable industrial equipment and connect clean data to the systems your team already uses.

Reliable reads are designed—not assumed
Metal, liquids, tag orientation, product speed and neighbouring readers all affect performance.
- Representative product and tag trials
- Antenna type, polarisation and mounting design
- Reader power and read-zone containment
- PLC, sensor and reject/divert integration
- Data filtering and exception handling
Which RFID reader arrangement fits the movement?
Begin with the event the operation needs to record and whether the item comes to a fixed point or an operator must find it. Evaluate the reader with its tags, antennas, surroundings and business rules; reader range on its own does not specify a working system.
Handheld readers for operator-led work
A handheld route can support stock counts and asset searches where the operator moves through the area. Define the item list, coverage procedure and how exceptions are reconciled. Test access to the real stored goods, and distinguish seeing a tag from confirming that every required asset was included in the task.
Fixed readers for repeatable stations
A fixed read point suits a defined production or material movement. Describe the item presentation, the moment a read is valid and the response to no read or an unexpected identity. Where a machine action follows, specify the handshake and result acknowledgement with the control system.
Portals and tunnels for moving groups
Portal and tunnel layouts need trials with normal tag populations, orientation and neighbouring stock. A useful pilot records what must be captured and what must be ignored. Include direction, repeat passages and partial loads before deciding how many observations should become one receiving, dispatch or production event.
Treat data handover as part of the pilot
Identify which PLC, WMS, ERP or other system owns the event and what it should receive. Challenge repeated observations, missing items and a communication interruption. Retain tag references, reader settings and the approved event rules so additional read points can be introduced against an understood baseline.

Industrial RFID FAQs
Questions before you choose a reader?
Start with the process and the environment. The hardware decision becomes much clearer once those are understood.
Ask our team a questionWhich industrial RFID reader is right for our application?+
It depends on where the read must happen, how items move, the tag type, surrounding materials and what your software needs to receive. Oxford Traceability can assess the process and recommend a fixed reader, handheld, portal, tunnel or mixed system.
Do you supply UHF and RAIN RFID readers?+
Yes. We design systems around UHF/RAIN RFID as well as HF/NFC where the application calls for it. Reader, antenna and tag selection are treated as one engineered read zone rather than separate catalogue items.
Can RFID data connect to our WMS, ERP or MES?+
Yes. Middleware can filter duplicate reads, apply business rules and pass useful events to WMS, ERP, MES, databases or cloud platforms using the interfaces available in your chosen systems.
Can you test our products and tags first?+
Yes. A practical read-zone trial is recommended, particularly around metal, liquids, dense tag populations or fast-moving conveyors. We can test representative products, tag positions and antenna arrangements before final specification.
Do you provide installation and support across the UK?+
Yes. Oxford Traceability supports UK industrial RFID projects from initial survey and trials through installation, integration, commissioning, training and ongoing support.
